Contrary to what the title suggests, The Drug Speech by Sandor Jay Sonnen is not a preachy book about the dangers of drugs and to "just say no". It is much better than that. The basis for the story is rooted in understanding and trust, and is told in a way that conveys patience and kindness with a bit of humor mixed in.
As parents we want the best for our kids, and too often we dictate to them what they should or shouldn't do without realizing the consequences of this authoritative approach. Teenagers typically rebel against being told what to do, which can lead to experimentation with drugs and alcohol.
The main message of The Drug Speech is the one that we so often fail to communicate to our children we were once teenagers too, and we understand what you are going through. Conversations begun from this viewpoint will have a much healthier impact on the choices our children make, along with the understanding that we are there for them whenever they need us.
I was deeply moved by this simple story. It describes exactly the kind of parent that I strive to be, and I will remember it each time I talk to my children about difficult issues. I also plan to read The Drug Speech to them so they can benefit from its message directly.
Don't forget to take notice of the illustrations that accompany the text. They balance the seriousness with wonderful humor. A very highly recommended book!

Parents always want to protect their child and prevent them from harm, but they cannot always be there when their children are making decisions in life. This book reminds parents that there are ways to discuss touchy subjects with their children without giving a lecture.
Many teenagers or children try to hide what they do from their parents, afraid that their parents would judge them or think poorly of them. The Drug Speech teaches children that their parents will always be there to lend a helping hand when they need it. If they get in trouble, their parents are willing to bail them out no matter what.
Without truly mentioning drugs, The Drug Speech shows the loving and supporting role of parents in their children's lives. It illuminates the understanding that parents have of the choices their children make because parents were once teenagers too and they have made mistakes in their past.
